Sportsman's DinnerJerry O'Haloran and his team, presented another magnificent Sportsman's Dinner at Walmley Social Club on Friday 27th. October. This Dinner is an annual event and a firm favourite in the local sporting calender. Many past and present footballers from both Aston Villa F. C. and Birmingham City F.C. attended. The guest sportsman this year was Jim Walker, who regailed us with stories from his footballing career. An event like this is never complete without a comedian. This year, the very funny John Stiles took centre stage. For those of us of a certain age, the name Stiles may ring a very large bell. Yes John is the son of the great Nobby Stiles.
This event is a major fundraiser for The League of Friends and the guests are not shy when it comes to opening their wallets. The winner of the raffle - tickets were £10 each, just to give you an idea - was a lovely chap sitting right behind Sue Jones and I, immediately surrendered his £150 prize, to donate to The LOF. Thank you Nick Lord. Nick told me later, that it was the first time in his life that he had won anything. How generous.
I can't tell you yet the total raised, as the final count has not yet been completed but no doubt Jerry will be along to Grange Road in the near future, with a lovely cheque. As soon as I know I will update this page with the amount.
